Probe Repair Work We Perform on the Bench
The six faults behind most of the transducers pulled from service, and what each repair involves.
Dead element and array repair
Dropout bands, dark wedges, and shadowing in a fixed position on the image trace to failed elements in the array. We map the array, identify the failed channels, and repair rather than reflexively condemning the head.
Lens wear, tears, and delamination
Worn, cut, and delaminated acoustic lenses are rebuilt so the coupling surface is continuous again. A lens that has lifted from the array creates a haze across the near field that gel and gain will not correct.
Cable and strain relief repair
Cables crushed by cart wheels or pulled at the strain relief lose conductors, which shows as flicker and intermittent dropout. Both ends are rebuilt and the sheath is replaced where the jacket has been flattened.
Connector and pin repair
Bent pins, corroded contacts, cracked shells, and worn latches are repaired so the probe seats fully in the port. A connector forced once will keep producing intermittent faults nobody can reproduce on request.
Housing, seal, and fluid ingress repair
Cracked housings and failed seals let disinfectant into the head, and the damage spreads quietly from there. We repair the housing, clean the internals, and document how far the fluid travelled before anything is quoted.
TEE probe leak testing and bite damage repair
Transesophageal probes are leak tested, and bite damage, insertion tube wear, and articulation faults are repaired at the same time. A TEE probe that fails a leak test comes out of rotation immediately, not after one more case.
Dead Elements, Dropout, and Image Loss in an Ultrasound Probe
Element failure has a signature. The defect stays in the same place on the screen no matter where the probe is pointed, usually as a dark wedge spreading down from the near field. Sonographers spot it long before anyone files a work order, because they start avoiding a section of the footprint.
That is worth acting on. A small number of failed channels is a repair. A probe that has been run for months with a growing dropout band is often a probe that also has lens and housing damage, and the repair list grows with the delay.
We map the array before quoting anything so you can see how many channels are actually gone. If the count makes repair the wrong call, we say so rather than rebuilding something that will be back on the bench shortly.
Probe Cable and Connector Damage From Cart Wheels
Most probes do not die from imaging. They die from being run over, dropped on the connector, or hung so the cable takes its own weight at the strain relief. The damage is mechanical, it is at the ends, and it is repairable when it is caught.
Intermittent flicker and dropout that nobody can reproduce on demand is the classic sign of a broken conductor inside the cable. Biomed spends more time chasing that fault than almost any other, because it behaves perfectly whenever it is being watched.
We repair the cable, rebuild both strain relief points, and address bent pins and worn latches at the connector. That combination is frequently the entire repair, at a small fraction of a replacement head.
TEE Probe Handling, Leak Testing, and Bite Damage
Transesophageal probes are the ones where a small problem becomes a patient safety question. The insertion tube takes bite damage, the outer layer breaches, and disinfectant reaches internals that were never meant to see it. Leak testing exists precisely to catch that before the probe goes back into a patient.
If a TEE probe fails a leak test, take it out of rotation and keep it dry. Do not run another high level disinfection cycle to confirm the result. The logic is identical to a flexible scope, and our page on failed leak tests covers why that second cycle does so much damage.
Articulation faults, bite damage, and insertion tube wear are repaired alongside the leak itself. Where fluid has already reached the internals, the extent is documented before anything is quoted, the same way we handle fluid invasion in flexible scopes.
Lens Wear and Delamination in Transducer Repair
The acoustic lens is a wear surface. It is scanned across skin thousands of times, wiped down with whatever wipe is on the cart, and eventually it cuts, thins, or lifts away from the array. The image goes hazy in the near field and the usual response is more gel and more gain.
Neither one fixes it. A lifted lens leaves an air gap that no amount of coupling agent replaces, and running the probe that way lets disinfectant reach the array underneath. Lens work is one of the more worthwhile repairs on this list because it protects everything behind it.
Procedural areas usually send probes and scopes together, which is the sensible way to do it.
