What we fix
Camera Repair Work We Perform on OR Video Equipment
The six faults behind most of the video complaints that reach biomed, and what each repair involves.
Camera head sensor and optics service
Noise, color shift, and dead pixels are traced to the sensor block and the optics in front of it. We clean, reseat, or replace what has failed and verify color balance against a reference target before release.
Cable and strain relief repair
Most intermittent video comes from the cable, not the head. We repair broken conductors, rebuild the strain relief at both ends, and replace the sheath where cart wheels and door frames have flattened it.
Connector and pin repair
Bent pins, corroded contacts, and cracked connector shells are rebuilt so the head seats fully in the console. A connector that has been forced once will keep dropping signal until it is properly repaired.
Endocoupler and focus mechanism repair
Sticking focus rings, worn scope clamps, and delaminated coupler optics are addressed as their own repair. A coupler that will not hold a telescope square produces a soft image that no amount of console adjustment corrects.
Autoclave and soak damage recovery
Immersion and steam damage on autoclavable heads is dried, cleaned, and sealed, with corrosion documented so you can see how far it went. We tell you plainly when a soaked head is no longer worth rebuilding.
Camera control unit board and port repair
Failed video outputs, dead ports, power faults, and control board damage are repaired at the console. We test the head, cable, and console together rather than returning a part that works only on our bench.
Camera Head Faults That Look Like a Scope Problem
A poor image gets blamed on the telescope more often than it should. The chain from tissue to monitor has four links, and any one of them produces the same complaint from the surgeon. Before a scope goes out for optical work, it is worth knowing which link actually failed.
The quickest test costs nothing. Look through the telescope eyepiece directly. If the field is clear that way and poor on the monitor, the fault sits in the coupler, the head, the cable, or the console. If it is poor through the eyepiece, the optic is the place to start and the rigid telescope side of the shop handles it.
We diagnose the whole chain because splitting it across vendors is how a facility ends up paying twice for one fault. The same visit that covers the head can cover the fiber optic cable feeding the scope, which is the single most common cause of a dim field.
Endocoupler Repair and the Focus Ring Nobody Checks
Couplers take a beating and almost never get inspected on their own. The clamp wears, the focus ring stiffens, and the internal optic picks up a haze from repeated reprocessing. None of that shows up on a checklist, and all of it degrades the image slowly enough that nobody notices the day it changed.
A worn clamp is the one to watch. If the telescope does not seat square in the coupler, the field goes soft off center and the console cannot correct it. Surgeons describe it as the camera being out of focus, which sends the wrong device out for repair.
We rebuild clamps, service focus mechanisms, and replace hazed coupler optics. When the coupler comes in with the head and the telescope together, we can tell you which of the three was actually responsible.
Camera Control Unit Faults and Cable Strain Relief
Intermittent video is the complaint that wastes the most staff time, because it never reproduces when biomed is standing there. The cause is usually mechanical rather than electronic. Conductors break inside the cable where it flexes, or the strain relief at the connector has pulled loose and the bundle is carrying the load.
We repair the cable and rebuild both strain relief points rather than replacing the head. That is often the entire fix, and it costs a fraction of what a head replacement does.
Console-side faults get the same treatment. Dead outputs, damaged ports, and power faults are repaired at the board level, and the head, cable, and console are tested as one set before anything ships back. Platforms differ in how they fail, so a Stryker camera system and an older console do not get the same inspection sheet.
Video Camera Color Shift, Noise, and Image Dropout
Color that drifts warm, grain in the shadows, and dropout at the edge of the field are three different problems that get reported as one. Grain usually means the sensor is being pushed because the illumination path has lost output. Color drift is a white balance or sensor issue. Dropout is almost always a connection.
Sorting those apart before anything is shipped saves a repair order. If the field is dim and the console is compensating with gain, the fault may be nowhere near the camera at all. The dim illumination page covers how to check that in a few minutes with equipment you already have.
Once the cause is clear, the repair is straightforward. Everything else we service is listed on the services overview, so a single account covers the tower, the scopes, and the trays.
