Light Cable Repair Work We Perform on Fiber Bundles

Fiber bundle replacement
When enough individual fibers have fractured, polishing the ends changes nothing. The bundle is replaced through the full length of the cable so the output comes back to where it started rather than partway.
End face refinishing and repolishing
Burned, pitted, and scratched end faces are ground back and polished flat. A face that has been cooked against a hot source scatters light before it ever reaches the scope, and it gets worse every case.
Fitting and adapter replacement
Cross-threaded, loose, and cracked fittings are replaced at either end, including screw-on adapters for other platforms. A fitting that does not seat squarely aims the bundle at the housing instead of the post.
Jacket and strain relief repair
Split jackets, crushed sections, and pulled strain relief are rebuilt so the bundle stops carrying the mechanical load. Cart wheels and door frames do more damage to cables than anything that happens in the sterile field.
Connector rebuild at the source end
The source end sees the most heat and the most handling. Melted, deformed, and burned connectors are rebuilt so the cable seats fully in the lamp housing and stops running hot in a partial connection.
Output measurement before and after
Every cable is measured on arrival and again after the repair so you can see the difference rather than take our word for it. Cables that cannot be brought back to a usable level are reported rather than returned quietly.
Broken Fiber Bundles and the Light You Are Losing
A light cable does not fail all at once. It loses individual fibers, a few at a time, every time it is coiled tightly, dropped, run over, or bent against a fitting. The field gets slightly darker each month, the source gets turned up to compensate, and nobody records the day it changed.
The check takes ten seconds. Disconnect the cable, point one end at the ceiling light, and look at the other end. Black speckles across the face are broken fibers. When the face looks more dark than bright, that cable is costing you image quality on every case it touches.
This is the failure most often misdiagnosed as a scope problem. Departments send a telescope out for optical work while the actual fault sits coiled on the tower. Our page on dim illumination and broken light fibers walks through separating the two.
Cable Repair That Restores Output Instead of Masking It
Turning the source up is not a fix. It hides a fading cable, pushes more heat into a damaged end face, and accelerates the same failure. It also drives the camera to compensate with gain, which is where the grain in the shadows comes from.
We repair to the level the cable can actually reach. If the bundle is intact and the end faces are burned, refinishing them recovers most of the loss. If enough fibers are fractured, the bundle is replaced through the full length, because polishing a broken bundle is decoration.
Output is measured before and after, so you get a number rather than an assurance. If a cable cannot be brought back to a usable level, we say so instead of returning it and letting the OR discover it mid case.
End Face Polishing and Light Transmission Testing
The two ends of a cable live very different lives. The source end takes heat and is often left half-seated in the housing, which cooks the face and deforms the connector. The scope end takes mechanical abuse from cross-threading and from being dropped on the fitting.
Both ends get refinished as part of a proper repair, along with the fittings themselves. A cross-threaded post is worth catching early, because forcing it damages the light post on the telescope, and a light post repair on the scope is a larger job than a cable repair.
When the telescope and the cable arrive together, we can tell you which side is responsible. That matters most on rigid sets, so if the OR is chasing brightness, send them with the rigid telescopes and we will check the illumination path end to end.
Light Cable Fittings, Adapters, and Cross-Threaded Posts
Mixed inventories create their own problems. Screw-on adapters get swapped between platforms, threads wear, and a cable that fits three towers ends up seating properly on none of them. The loss is invisible because nothing is broken, it is simply misaligned.
We replace fittings and adapters at either end and confirm that the bundle is centered on the post rather than aimed at the housing. It is a small piece of work that recovers a surprising amount of output.
